Mankulam Travel Guide: Things to Do Near Munnar
Mankulam sits about 35 km north-west of Munnar town, deep in Kerala's high ranges. It is quieter, greener and far less crowded than Munnar itself — a valley of cardamom hills, shola forest, river pools and elephants that still walk down to drink at dusk. This is our local guide to what is worth your time here.
Anakulam Elephant Viewpoint
About 20 minutes from Mankulam town, wild elephants come down to the river in the late afternoon to drink the mineral-rich water. Go around 4–6 pm and watch quietly from the bank.
Waterfalls & river pools
Viripara Falls and the smaller cascades along the Mankulam road are perfect for a cool dip after a morning trek. Best between June and January when the streams run full.
Forest treks & cardamom hills
Guided treks climb through shola forest, cardamom plantations and grassland ridges with wide views over the Western Ghats. Early morning walks often start above the clouds.
Jeep safaris & tea gardens
Open jeep rides take you along mud tracks to viewpoints, tea estates and hidden hamlets that regular Munnar tours never reach.

Best time to visit Mankulam
September to March brings clear mountain mornings and comfortable evenings — ideal for trekking and elephant spotting. The monsoon months of June to August turn the valley an intense green with waterfalls at their strongest, best enjoyed slowly from a balcony with hot tea.
How to reach Mankulam
Cochin International Airport is roughly 4 hours away by road. From Munnar town it is a scenic hour-long drive through Anachal and Viripara. The last stretch is narrow hill road, so daytime travel is easiest.
